Victoria’s Secret is the largest American retailer of lingerie which was founded in June 12, 1977 by Mr. Roy Raymond. Some of the products that the company sells are underwear, women’s clothing, swimwear, footwear, fragrances and beauty products. The company has 1,017 owned stores and 18 independently owned stores, particularly in USA, Canada, United Kingdom and Asia.

History

Victoria’s Secret was founded by Roy Raymond when he got embarrassed when purchasing a lingerie for his wife in a department store. After eight years Raymond studied the lingerie market and he borrowed $40,000 from his parents and $40,000 from a bank to establish Victoria’s Secret store for men to be comfortable when buying lingerie as a present for their special someone in life. The first store was located in Stanford Shopping Center in California. The business grew in its first year enough to finance the headquarters and warehouse. By the year 1980, Raymond had added two more stores in San Francisco and in 1982 the fourth store was added. By the year 1982, the company’s philosophy of focusing on selling lingerie to male customers became increasingly unprofitable which led to bankruptcy. Raymond sold Victoria’s Secret to Mr. Leslie Wexner, the creator of Limited Stores Inc. for $1million. In 1983, Leslie Wexner improved Victoria’s Secret philosophy from selling lingerie to male customers and replacing it with one that focused on women. After five years from the company’s purchased the three store boutique transformed into 346 store retailer. The company was the only national chain of lingerie stores in 1986.
