Abercrombie & Fitch began in 1892, when David Abercrombie founded the company as an upscale sporting goods store which originally established as Abercrombie Co. He partnered with Ezra Fitch as his co-founder, a wealthy New York businessman who became his regular customer, and later on buying a major share in the growing company. So the official name became Abercrombie & Fitch Co. The company started to mailed catalogs which features outdoor clothing, articles, camping and advice columns. The catalog proved to be a good marketing device even it costs too much that resulted to nearly bankruptcy of the company. The company began selling women’s clothing in 1910 and became the first store in New York to supply clothing for women and men. Abercrombie & Fitch Co. became the first store to import Mahjong when a female customer looked for the game that she played in China. The game became the fastest selling product and the center of the Mahjong craze. Abercrombie left the company and Fitch became the sole owner which ushered him of continued success. When Fitch retired in 1928, he sold his share to his brother-in-law, James Cobb. The company still continued under the leadership and management of other leaders, which brought the company’s closing in 1977. Limited Brands purchased the company in 1988. The company’s headquarter was moved to Columbus, Ohio. And brought Mike Jeffries, executive took over president in 1992 of the company. He changed the image of Abercrombie & Fitch and became a youthful retailer. He believed that the teen market would be financially as the retail economy was growing at that time. In mid- 1990s, there were dozens of A & F stores in the United States and on September 1996 the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange. By the 21st century, the company was rated as the sixth popular brand before Nintendo and Levi’s. In January 2006, the company began its expansion in Canadian territory, particularly in Toronto and Edmonton and in 2007 they opened their first store in London. The company is now a multi-billion dollar entity that continues to grow through the years.
