The company started when founder Tom Monaghan and his brother James purchased a small pizza store named DomiNick’s located in Michigan. Both of them divide the work hours evenly and within eight months James decided to trade half of the business to Tom for buying a Volkswagen Beetle they used in delivery. In 1965, Tom purchased two more pizzerias and he wanted to share the same branding with the two new stores. The original owner of Dominicks prohibits him in using the brand name. Then one day, an employee suggested the name Domino’s and Tom immediately embraced the idea and renamed the business Domino’s Pizza in 1965. Domino’s Pizza logo originally had three dots which represent the three stores they have in 1965. The business expanded with rapid growth and they opened their first franchise in 1967. Domino’s Pizza expanded to 200 stores in 1978. In 1983, the company opened their first international store in Manitoba, Canada and with the same year Domino’s Pizza has 1,000 store overall. In 1985, they opened their first store in Tokyo, Japan and in the United Kingdom. In 1997, Domino’s Pizza opened their 1,500th store international location. In 1998, founder Tom Monaghan announced his retirement and sold the company to Bain Capital, Inc. The company named Mr. David Brandon as the CEO. In 2004, Domino’s Pizza began trading on the New York Stock Exchange and was named Chain of the Year in 2003, 2010 and 2011. In 2006, they opened their 5,000th store in Illinois, U.S.A.
