Dairy Queen is an American chain of soft serve ice creams and fast food restaurants. It is owned by International Dairy Queen, Inc. which also owns Karmelkorn and Orange Julius. Dairy Queen’s popular ice cream treats are Blizzards, cones and sundaes. The company’s headquarters is located in Minnesota, U.S.A.
Blizzard is DQ’s popular item, it is a soft-serve ice cream mix with different toppings such as brownies, cookies or candy. Popular flavors include are Chocolate chip cookie, oreo cookies, M&M’s, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and Butter-finger. DQ introduced Frozen yogurt in 1990, it is their alternative for a lower-calorie soft serve ice cream.

Dairy Queen or DQ is also a sponsor to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals started in 1984. It is an international non-profit organization that helps in generating funds and programs to benefit kids to be treated at hospitals throughout North America.

Dairy Queen also partnered with local communities to encourage students strives for excellence. The company offer tours of their restaurants to students in grades 1-4 to learn how the facility works and teach them the importance of cleanliness and hard work. After the tour, students learn how making their own Dairy Queen cone. The company also provides discount and create student meals for all students in high school and college.


The Dairy Queen started when John Fremont McCullough developed a soft serve frozen dairy product in 1938 together with his son. They asked their friend and a loyal customer Sheb Noble to offer their product in his ice cream store in Illinois. Noble made a sale from more than 1,600 servings of the product within two hours. McCulloughs and Noble then decided to open the first Dairy Queen store in 1940 located in Illinois. In 1949, they introduced malts and shakes. Dairy Queen was a pioneer of food franchising. They opened their first store in Canada by the year 1953. In 1962, International Dairy Queen was formed. In 1972, Dairy Queen opened their first store in Japan. In 1979, they opened their DQ systems in the Middle East. In 1989, Dairy Queen ranked as the number one treat chain in the U.S. In 1991, they opened their first store in Mexico. In 2001, DQ began introducing Crispy Chicken Salad on their menu. In 2005, Dairy Queen built the World’s Largest Blizzard Treat in Massachusetts. At the end of 2006, the company has more than 5,000 stores located across the globe.
