Northwestern Mutual was founded on March 2, 1857 as the Mutual Life Insurance Company of that State of Wisconsin. The company experienced its first two death claims when Wisconsin’s first train accident took the lives of 14 people and that two of them are policy owners of the company. The claims reached in $3,500 but the small company had only $2,000 on hand. President Samuel Daggett and Treasurer Charles Nash had to borrow personally the needed funds to pay the claims immediately. After that incident, the company’s tradition of keeping its promises was born and saw a vast increase in the company’s sales and expanding into new markets. In 1865, the company was already operating throughout the Midwest and began reaching the market along the East. The board of trustees changed its name to The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. The company focused on life insurance all throughout the early years of the 20th century. And by 1969, the company began offering disability insurance and less than a decade later they introduced retirement annuities to their employee benefits market. The company became the nation’s largest direct provider of individual life insurance in the United States and became also the industry leader for life insurance dividends paid to policy owners.
