GameStop was founded in 1984 as Babbage’s, a small software retailer in Dallas, Texas. It was founded by James McCurry and Gary Kusin, former Harvard Business School classmates. They named the company after Charles Babbage and opened its first store in the Dallas NorthPark Center. Babbage’s focus on video game sales and started selling Nintendo games in 1987. The transformation from Babbage’s into GameStop began from a series of mergers. Babbage’s first merged with Software Etc., which specialized in personal computing, software, in which they create a NeoStar Retail Group in 1994. James McCurry became the chairman of NeoStar. In 1999, Babbage’s Etc. was purchased by Barnes & Noble. The next merging was with Funco, Inc. which was obtained as well by Barnes & Noble in 2000. By the end of 2000, Funco changed its name to GameStop and the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2002. GameStop acquired Electronics Boutique in 2005 and purchased Rhino Video Games from Blockbuster in 2007.
